  << Back to Course List

TCP/IP Protocols

Course Code:
TCPROT
Duration:
6 hours
Prerequisites:
The course TCP/IP Architecture and Routing
Course Aim:
To describe TCP/IP protocols in detail
Learning Objectives:
After this course the student should be able to:
1. describe the IP packet format
2. describe the use of ICMP messages
3. describe the TCP packet format

TCP/IP Management: SNMP

Course Code:
TCPMAN
Duration:
5 hours
Audience:
Operational and technical support staff
Prerequisites:
A thorough understanding of the TCP/IP suite is required, which is provided by the course TCP/IP Protocols
Course Aim:
To enable the student to implement and support the TCP/IP application SNMP
Learning Objectives:
After this course the student should be able to:
1. implement the TCP/IP SNMP protocol
2. manage a standardized form of network in accordance with the IAB's plans
3. write an MIB object description

OSI Model: Fundamentals

Course Code:
OSI001E
Duration:
3 hours
Prerequisites:
A basic knowledge of computers would be an advantage
Course Aim:
To give the student a thorough grounding in the OSI reference model and an appreciation of the applications using this model
Learning Objectives:
After this course the student should be able to:
1. outline the need for internationally accepted and implemented networking standards
2. outline the OSI reference model
3. identify the seven OSI layers and their functions
4. explain how the OSI model represents the protocols and primitives involved in networking
5. describe the OSI application protocols

OSI Model: Lower Layers

Course Code:
OSI002E
Duration:
4 hours
Prerequisites:
A thorough understanding of the principles of OSI; completion of the course OSI Model: Fundamentals
Course Aim:
To enable the student to configure and implement networks at the lower layers of the OSI reference model
Learning Objectives:
After this course the student should be able to:
1. detail the functions and services of the three lower layers of the OSI model
2. choose the appropriate combination of the type of link, transmission medium, and topology for a given situation
3. choose the appropriate type of connection, flow control, and addressing system for a given situation
4. describe the HDLC protocol
5. identify the types of service and the method of flow control offered by the network layer
6. suggest ways of dealing with congestion

OSI Model: Upper Layers

Course Code:
OSI003E
Duration:
5 hours
Prerequisites:
A thorough understanding of the principles of OSI as covered in OSI Model: Fundamentals and completion of the course OSI Model: Lower Layers, while not essential, would be useful
Course Aim:
To enable the student to implement the upper layers of the OSI reference model, which support the OSI application service elements
Learning Objectives:
After this course the student should be able to:
1. detail the functions and services of the three upper layers of the OSI reference model
2. explain the operation of the transport layer and compare TCP/IP with TP4
3. distinguish between synchronization, activity management, and exception reporting
4. contrast abstract and transfer syntax and identify the fields of the ASN.1 tag
5. summarize the use of data encryption and compression
6. describe the operation and purpose of ACSE and CCR and identify their primitives
7. compare VT, FTAM, and ROSE
8. outline the operation of electronic mail
